
Julie London (nee Peck, September 26, 1926 - October 18th, 2000) is an American singer-actress whose career spans over 40 years. London was a torch performer known for her soft, soothing singing voice and her smooth, languid contralto was a recording artist on more than thirty albums of pop and jazz standards between 1955-1969. The first time she was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame was her recording of "Cry Me a River", a song she introduced on her debut album. In addition to the recording, London was nominated for an award called a Golden Globe Award in 1974 for her portrayal of nurse Dixie McCall in the television show Emergency!. London was born in Santa Rosa to vaudevillian parents. Her professional career began acting as an actress as she was employed as an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles. London's 35-year-long acting career began in 1944 , with roles in films. This included roles as the female lead in several westerns. London also starred alongside Rock Hudson in The Fat Man (1951), John Cassavetes and Robert Taylor in Saddle the Wind (1958), Gary Cooper in Man of the West (1958) and Robert Mitchum with The Wonderful Country (1959). She signed a recording deal with Liberty Records in the mid-1950s. This marked the beginning of her professional career in music. The album she recorded her final studio album released in the year 1969. She continued to enjoy success as the female lead in the role of Dixie McCall on the television series Emergency! (1972-1979) where she co-starred with husband Bobby Troup. Jack Webb, her ex-husband also produced the show.
