Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is a feminist media critic as well as a public speaker, and Canadian. She created Feminist Frequency the site with videos and guest posts discussing the depictions of females in pop culture. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning Canadian-American feminist media critic and blogger. Feminist Frequency, a website to educate women about their role in the narratives of pop culture was the result of her research. The site also has the executive director. She's determined to dismantle stereotypes about women and how they are portrayed in popular media. Additionally she aims to create awareness about online harassment targeted at women, and other marginalized groups of people. Sarkeesian, who holds the degree of Master's in Social and Political Thinking from York University, is a popular public speaker. She has spoken at the TEDxWomen festival as well as United Nations Broadband Working Group to Gender. She was fascinated by gender issues and feminism from a very young age. In 2009, when she was continuing to study at the university level she launched the Feminist Frequency website. The site was created by a woman in her early 20s determined to make a series of web videos that would examine gender representations in games. However, she became the victim of online harassment. But the assault did not deter her instead it only strengthened her resolve to be a feminist media critic. Her notable contributions to the feminist field were recognized by a variety of prizes. Anita Sarkeesian is an award winning media critic and the founder of Feminist Frequency an educational and non-profit organization focused on the portrayal of women in popular media narratives.
